The Chain of Hope Belgium maintains a solidarity fund to cover medical costs for children who would otherwise not have access to medical care: this fund is used to pay for medical & surgical interventions on children who are brought to Belgium for treatment and to contribute to the cost of treatment in our NGO-partner countries.

Currently, Benin is the only country that benefits from the financial support of The Chain of Hope Belgium.  The NGO’s financial contributions cover the cost of accommodation & food (or the equivalent per-diem) for the medical teams who travel to Tanguiéta to treat the children and the hospital Saint-Jean de Dieu takes care of all the arrangements.

Similarly, the concept of a fund has been agreed by all partners of the project to cover, either partially or totally, the medical costs of the most impoverished patients who will receive treatment at the Ngaliema Clinic’s center for pediatric surgery in the DRC.  The project partners will actively participate in the selection of patients as well as fundraising: the solidarity fund will be operational as of the start of activities and will be supported mainly by local donations from private companies and charitable organisations.

The access to specialized medical helathcare can be even more complicated when living in rural areas or in areas with low density of population, or with a high rate of minority people. It is even more true for specialized medical healthcare, but also for first line health care or for paramedics.

In order to address this issue, the NGO has designed a special program in DRC to reach more patients who leave farther away from the Ngaliema Clinic in Kinshasa. The objective is to enhance, through adequate training, the quality of the diagnosis and of the early detection and treatment of the heart pathologies with children.

Children who suffer from a heart disease, or who show symptoms of a heart related malformation are being taken care of both preventively and curatively in sanitary centers in the city-province of Kinshasa, as well in other cities throughout the country (Goma, Lubumbashi, Kisangani and potentially Mbuji-Mayi) and are integrated into a referecing and counter-referencing program.

Early diagnosis and adequate treatment are key elements in preventing families from losing precious time and money with inadequate treatment.
